Vintage Edmonton: Packingtown, North Edmonton (1909)



During one of my trips through the Bulletin archives recently, I found in the August 7, 1909 edition a section devoted to the the  then-new village of North Edmonton and the development including a number of businesses, neighbourhoods, and packing plants (one with a chimney you'll all recognize).

The articles, ads, and pictures included were meant to spur on more development in the area; it worked, as Packingtown became part of Edmonton in 1912 and the packing plants that anchored the area were fixtures for decades. This is a fascinating look at one of the most historic areas of Edmonton in it's embryo:
