Vintage Edmonton Film: King George Visits Edmonton (June 2, 1939)



Another great  historical film from The Provincial Archives Of Alberta via The McDougall Fonds, this color film from June 2, 1939 shows the visit of King George VI  to Edmonton as part of his US-Canadian Tour. As always, stunning footage of Downtown as well as Kingway Avenue where 68,000 people lined up and sat of grandstands to get a peek at the Royal Visitors. The Journal reported The Royal Family used The Hotel Macdonald as home base for the 6 1/2 hour visit, where King George and Queen Elizabeth waved to onlookers from outside the mezzanine at the front of the hotel before their dinner:
